01
Context and problem
innogy wanted an iOS and Android app that shows real-time energy consumption, billing information and smart insights, with more features planned along the way.
The challenge was to present complex data through a clean interface that feels simple, even to someone opening the app for the very first time. The bigger aim: make unexpected gas bills a thing of the past.
02
Research and discovery
Research into what users really need pointed to three things: usage trends, bill reminders and a quick way to contact support.
03
Key decisions
- 01
Expected versus measured
- Problem
- People often found out only at the final bill that their monthly payments had been too low.
- Decision
- A chart compares expected and measured costs and predicts the result in advance.
- Why
- People can adjust their monthly payments before a surprise bill arrives.
- 02
Reminders instead of surprises
- Problem
- Bills and changes in usage are easy to miss when nobody checks an energy app every day.
- Decision
- User flows for bill reminders, push notifications and usage comparisons.
- Why
- Research showed reminders were among the things people needed most.
- 03
A quick way to get help
- Problem
- When something looks wrong on a bill, people want answers fast.
- Decision
- A short, step-by-step route to customer support, prototyped in Axure.
- Why
- Quick contact with support was one of the top needs the research uncovered.
04
Validation
Prototypes and usability tests refined the navigation and the dashboard before release.
“This system helped me very much to see how much I need to adjust my monthly payments.”

What I learned
Complex data can be made clear and even motivating. The project also grew my soft skills, above all communicating with the team and the client to reach decisions that benefit both sides.
